In principle all plants which generate energy (electricity, heating/cooling and fuels) from renewable sources have the option of obtaining a naturemade certificate. To do this, they must meet the applicable criteria.

Renewable sources include hydroelectric power, biomass, wind power and solar energy.

Ecological test criteria based on sound scientific principles have been developed for naturemade star from hydroelectric power. In addition to overall consideration across the whole lifecycle, local and regional test criteria apply.

Certification is separate for production (the plant) and supply. This guarantees that the ecological added value of energy produced on naturemade principles is only sold once.

The naturemade certification procedure

1.

Preliminary study and management plan for naturemade star hydroelectric power (except from drinking and wastewater power plants). These are prepared by the power plant (e.g. in cooperation with a hydro-ecological expert).

2.

Audit by a VUE-accredited lead auditor (for naturemade star from hydroelectric power, a specialist auditor is also involved, except for drinking and wastewater power plants).

3.

Lead auditor passes necessary documents and reports to VUE for certification.

4.

Certification by VUE Board.

5.

Annual control audit.

6.

Recertification every five years.
